Blankets!

March 25, 2015

I started crocheting when Oliver was much younger and still napping. We had been given a crocheted baby blanket by one of Sam’s co-workers and we used it all the time. As more and more of my friends started having babies of their own, I knew that I wanted to make them presents that were thoughtful and handmade (and hopefully useful). I bought a book (not helpful) and then went to a yarn store to learn how to crochet. That first day I starting making a hat. After making a few hats, I thought back to the blanket that we had been given for Oliver and about how much we used it and moved on to baby blankets. Over the course of 6 or 7 years I made about 30 baby blankets (give or take). I guess my friends were having a lot of babies!

Sometimes when I can’t sleep at night, I think about which blanket, with which yarn, I made for which baby. I can’t quite remember them all, but I can remember making specific blankets at specific times, taking them on trips, crocheting or knitting on the couch or in the car while Oliver and later Henry napped. And then I think about how old those babies are now and the little people they are becoming, and how could so many years have passed???

I wonder how much use my blankets got, how many little toes did they keep warm at night or on a walk in the stroller. Sometimes friends will send me photos of their kids with their blankets (thanks guys!) or I will see them thrown over the back of a chair or couch when we visit. Or even in the back ground of photos on Facebook! I know that we no longer use the baby blanket that Oliver was given. Occasionally the boys use it for forts or bring it into their beds, but mainly it just sits on the shelf, a reminder of how quickly time files and how our little ones are growing up faster than ever.

When I first started making blankets I didn’t have a blog and I wasn’t on Ravelry, but I did take a few photos over the years.

Here’s Oliver:

All this to say that I have a new baby blanket in the works! I have the yarn…

…now I just need to figure out what I want to do with it!

I love your blankets and colour combinations. I have always wanted to learn to crochet just for blanket making! I find them more sturdy than the ones I have knit but I have never gotten around to taking a class. You have definitely made me want to do something about going out and learning!

I love our two blankets as well. I always feel guilty I didn’t make them anything, but luckily they have an awesome crafty tia deia.
