Hanging with my boys

July 8, 2013

I had a few weeks with the boys between school ending and when they started at camp and realized that if we were going to survive, I would have to come up with some things to do. A few times a week, after I had taken care of some chores around the house and we were dressed (which took longer and longer each day) we would pick an outing for the day. Some of our favorite places are the Lawrence Hall of ScienceTilden Botanical Gardens, and the Lindsay Wildlife Museum.

Inspired to get outside for unstructured play, we also went on a nature hike on the Tilden Wildcat Gorge Trail. It was a beautiful day:

We checked out the wildlife:

And found some cool rocks:

But then we ran into this little guy:

Poison Oak. That quickly ended the “unstructured” part of our hike (“stay on the trail, stay out of the bushes, don’t touch anything green”). But we did still have a great time.

The best outing was to Adventure Playground  in the Berkeley Marina. Wow, is this place amazing. It’s free and you can build with hammers, nails, and saws and you can paint pretty much wherever you want.

Henry had a blast!

Took calls from his suppliers:

Oliver also loved building things:

And riding the zip line:

This seriously is the coolest place for unstructured playtime.

Now that the boys are at camp, I’m going to miss hanging out with them and going on our little outings, but phew, I’m wiped out! It will be relaxing to go back to work.
